Sotheby’s Pinot Noir Wine Guide

LIVunLtd Clients joined Yassmin Dever, Wine Advisor from Sotheby’s Wine for a virtual happy hour last week on the LIVunLtd Instagram. The second installment was all about Pinot Noir, the most romanticized red wine in the world. Here is their curated selection for our clients:

1. 2017 Sotheby’s: Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($39.95)

A really beautifully balanced expression of New World (California) Pinot Noir. This will be more fruit-forward with notes of lush, candied red raspberry, strawberry and cherry notes while maintaining really nice vibrant energy and freshness on the palate. This is one of my go-to reds and a consistent crowd-pleaser.

2. 2017 Evening Land: “Seven Springs Vineyard” Pinot Noir ($37.95)

To me, wines from Oregon often represent a hybrid of what you’d expect from the New and Old World as they are in a slightly cooler climate compared to California. The result is a wine that still has the fruit-led profile typical of New World wines but with a bit more Old World freshness and acidity. This wine is really delicate and silky with aromas of cherry, plum, strawberry and rose petal punctuated with some spicy and savory notes. Many would confuse this with wine from Burgundy in a blind tasting.

3. 2017 Berthaut-Gerbet: Vosne Romanee ($84.95)

A classic Old World expression of Pinot Noir from its spiritual home in Burgundy. The character of fruit in this wine is relatively more fresh, spicy and earthy rather than candied and fruity as you’d find in many New World versions. Berthaut-Gerbet is a gem of a Domaine that crafts wines with incredible definition and energy, offering incredible value nowadays when its hard to find a good bottle off Burgundy under $100.

4. 2017 Marquis d’Angerville: Volnay Champans 1er Cru ($160)

Guillaume d’Angerville is in a league of his own…Burgundy wine royalty and a name that all wine lovers should know. He owns some of the most sought after vineyards in the region and the wines are immaculate and defined by aromatic complexity, elegance, and a hauntingly long finish. While they are a pleasure to drink now, these are serious wines that were built to last and improve with cellaring. If this wine was a person, I’d describe it as Audrey Hepburn.

5. 2017 Peter Michael: Le Moulin Rouge ($114.95)

A powerful, rich, complex Pinot Noir that is incredible seductive and enchanting on the nose with deep concentration on the palate. This is a top example of New World Pinot Noir and is worth the splurge. While I would liken the Marquis d’Angerville Volnay to Audrey Hepburn, this Pinot Noir from Peter Michael would be the Scarlett Johansen of Pinot Noirs.
