Sotheby’s Chardonnay Wine Guide

March 28, 2020

LIVunLtd Clients joined Yassmin Dever, Wine Advisor from Sotheby’s Wine for a virtual happy hour yesterday on the LIVunLtd Instagram. This first installment was all about Chardonnay. Here is their curated selection for our clients:

1. 2016 Sotheby’s: Chablis Enchere ($21.95)

My go-to everyday white when I’m craving a dry, mineral-laden, unoaked Chardonnay with crisp acidity. This is a classic expression of Chardonnay from Chablis – a relatively cooler region in the most northerly region of Burgundy that tends to be associated with less oaky styles.

2. 2017 Jean-Noël Gagnard: Chassagne-Montrachet Champ Derrière ($64.95)

This wine offers a bit more richness and roundness relative to the Chablis, but still maintains vibrant acidity to strike a beautiful balance. This is a great opportunity to taste the greatness of Chassagne-Montrachet at a reasonable price point – Grand Cru wines from this renowned village in Burgundy achieve some of the highest prices for white wine in the world.

3. 2017 Ridge Estate: Chardonnay ($54.95)

Ridge is an iconic producer to know in California. Thanks to the relatively warmer, sunnier climate compared to Burgundy, fruit flavors feature more prominently and the toasty, oaky flavors are a bit more assertive in this wine. But make no mistake, this elegant and balanced wine is a far cry from the intensely concentrated buttered popcorn fruit bomb that many have come to associate with Chardonnay.

4. 2018 Henri Boillot: Puligny Montrachet Clos de la Mouchere 1er Cru ($180)

This wine combines the most exciting aspects of Burgundian chardonnay: purity of fruit, effortless minerality, vibrant energy and laser-like precision and focus on the palate. This Premier Cru is worthy of a special occasion and truly sings.
