March 6, 2024
You know that feeling you get when you are astonished by something immense, inspiring, overpowering or beyond our understanding? Turns out, this feeling, awe, could drastically improve your mental health and wellbeing. With new studies coming out, increasing the amount of awe you experience is trending in the wellness world. That’s why we’ve come up with a few ways to incorporate daily doses of awe into your life, so you can feel like your most refreshed and centered self.
Move with others
From group dancing lessons to yoga class, moving in a synchronous rhythm with a group of people has been shown to make people feel more bonded and connected to others. The strengthening of social ties makes us feel as if we are part of something greater, eliciting feelings of awe.
Read a book or article that teaches you about a brand new topic
We all know that feeling when we learn something new about the world that captivates us. Whether picking up a book about a new topic that excites you or reading an article about something groundbreaking, the feeling of being fascinated by new knowledge can elicit awe.
Take more nature walks
Whether walking around your local park, observing the changing seasons in your neighborhood, or heading to the closest hiking trail, nature has the power to make us experience awe. Try being more observant of your surroundings, intentionally seeking to be amazed by the vastness and beauty of the natural world.
Go to a concert, listen to new music, or watch videos of incredible performances
Whether seeing your favorite artist live in concert, discovering a new song that resonates so deeply with you, or watching a YouTube video of Beyoncé’s top performances, musical talent and depth can make you more likely to experience awe.
Look at visual art or films
Appreciating the remarkable artistic abilities of others not only sparks your own creativity but also evokes a sense of wonder at their beautiful work. When you connect deeply with someone’s visual art, it cultivates an emotional bond that inspires awe.
Take photos of beautiful things in your life
Capturing snapshots of your surroundings fosters intentional observation and mindfulness, encouraging you to slow down and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. Reflecting on these images later can transport you back to the awe-inspiring moments and emotions, reigniting the initial sense of wonder you felt when immersed in the beauty of your environment.
Water a plant and notice its changes
Taking care of plants can be highly therapeutic. Whether starting from a seed or watching new leaves on your houseplant grow, observing the miracles of plantlife can help elicit awe and make you feel more connected to other living beings on this planet.
Practice meditation + mindfulness
When we slow down and focus on the little details of life, we become more mesmerized by the present. Whether paying attention to your body’s ability to breathe or the way your mind and body feel connected, meditation and mindfulness can help you feel at peace and open to experiencing the awe in your life.
